Ragged Edge 4x4
How capable are these Hire Drive 4x4s? |
|
"I have to say that these ‘trucks’ have been a nightmare for me. Not because the 44"
tyres are lacking in traction or the alloy headed 350 Chevy’s are lacking in the ‘mojo’
department. It’s certainly not because the rear-steer doesn’t make these big trucks
incredibly manoeuvrable or the 16” coil-overs struggle with flexing these trucks inside
out. It’s because building tracks that challenge these 4x4s is near impossible! Having
said that I think I’ve got there now: you have been warned" says Chris Nolan propietor. One of the crawling beasts was on display at the Ateco Warn Challenge Round 3 in July 2008 with spectators and competitors admiring The (Helmet Boy) Rig with lots of people watching the rig do a demonstration run on part of Stage 12 on the Sunday.
The first obstacle was a log that competitors would have to winch over but not this rig, it just walked over as if it were a small branch. Down a steep embankment into the creek with large rocks which had to be navigated. Comp trucks banged and scraped over and round these obstacles but the Ragged Edge Helmet Boy again walked over the rocks with ease. ![]() Up a small creek bank and a little power from the Chev 350 saw the buggy do a very tight and tidy 'U' turn thanks to the front & rear steering. Sitting in the passengers seat was great and apart from the engine all you heard was the sound of the actuators moving the rear steer. It was like being inside a robot.
Back down into the creek for a return drive over the rocks with an occasional clunck from rock meeting chasis but still moving forward, the Helmet Boy came to the steep embankment and just drove up as if it weren't there. Again we came to the large tree but this time the buggy got both front wheels over with the rears sliding along and the creek coming closer with a click of a switch the rear steer straightened the buggy up and over the tree we went. Going 4WD has learnt that there is a possibility that the Ragged Edge (Helmet Boy) may compete in next years Cliff Hanger Event so Watch This Space.
